Drayson Technologies is launching a new campaign which aims to map pollution levels across London. ‘Map London’ calls for communities, sports groups and organisations to come forward and help build the first up-to-date air pollution data map of a city.
Groups are being encouraged to register their interest through the Map London website. They will then be equipped with CleanSpace tags; personal air pollution smart sensors designed by Drayson Technologies. These tags will enable local groups and communities across the city to generate vast amounts of data, helping to create a hyper-local picture of London’s air pollution to a level of detail never seen before.
The campaign is being supported by Greenpeace and the British Lung Foundation, as the organisations campaign to improve air quality in London and across the world. With outdoor air pollution contributing to around 40,000 early deaths a year in the UK, according to the Royal College of Physicians, the campaign aims to inform the public of the extent of air pollution in the city and allow them to take steps to reduce their exposure.
The provision of CleanSpace tags to local groups and communities will use the power of the public to collect air pollution data wherever they are. Individuals will be able to monitor their personal exposure to air pollution, and over time the successful uptake of tags as part of ‘Map London’ will collect enough data to inform the wider public of their air pollution exposure, through the sharing of data, insights and reports from Drayson Technologies.

Dr Penny Woods, chief executive, British Lung Foundation, commented: “It’s great to see companies using innovative ways to track air quality in areas where people live, work and study. Poor air quality, particularly concentrations of diesel pollution of the kind seen in many busy city locations, can seriously affect people’s health - especially if you have a pre-existing lung condition or are a growing child.
“The important question is, what do we do with this information? We would urge public and private companies to work together to control and reduce pollution levels to improve all our health.”
Barbara Stoll, senior air quality campaigner at Greenpeace, said: “Figures show that nearly 10,000 people die prematurely from air pollution in London every year. Thousands of school children are particularly at risk and are forced to breathe illegal, dangerous air across the capital.
“Londoners should have access to adequate information about the quality of the air that they are breathing and such information should be readily accessible. Official monitoring data does exist, but personal monitors can be really helpful to bridge the gap between making this data easy to access and to understand.
“Being aware of pollution levels around us is solving a part of the problem, but to truly solve the crisis what we need is action from the government - both at London and national level to ensure that people are breathing cleaner air.”
