EION and Edgewater Wireless develop integrated LTE and Wi-Fi small cell

Edgewater Wireless Systems has teamed up with EION Wireless to develop an integrated LTE and Wi-Fi small cell solution. The product combines Edgewater’s high-density WiFi3 integrated multi-channel Wi-Fi technology with EION’s high capacity small cell solution.

EION is developing the product in partnership with Edgewater Wireless to deliver ubiquitous coverage using both LTE and Wi-Fi. The two companies, both based in Ottawa, Canada, claim the product is the first RF agnostic solution for LTE + Wi-Fi available on the market today. The product also boasts the lowest overall deployment cost (CAPEX & OPEX) for a full integrated product versus a layered solution of LTE with Wi-Fi as an add-on component.
The integrated solution will also leverage WiFi3’s wideband RF front end and patented interference mitigation technology to deliver the most channel density and 200% the coverage of a legacy LTE.

Orders are now being accepted for the fully integrated LTE +WiFi3 product, which will ship in September 2016.

The small cell industry is forecast for 43% annual growth according to the latest report from ABI Research and is projected to be worth $3.92 billion by 2020, according to Markets and Markets.

Network infrastructure is moving quickly away from coverage-centric to a more agile capacity-focused network deployment model to effectively add capacity in high-density locations. WiFi3 integrated with EION’s small cell solutions will offer the highest capacity small cell + Wi-Fi product available in the market today, according to Edgewater and EION.
