Xirrus selects Cavium OCTEON III processors for 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi equipment provider Xirrus has selected the Cavium OCTEON III processor family to power its next-generation of 802.11ac Wave 2 high-performance single and multi-radio wireless platforms.

In order to deliver a superior quality of experience (QoE) in high-density enterprise, hospitality, and other dense campus environments, Xirrus next-generation 802.11ac Wave 2 WLAN access points require a powerful processing solution with unique processing engines and programmability to implement complex provisioning, scheduling and application control features.

These access points need to serve a large number of users in a thermally challenging environment with minimal airflow. Powered by the OCTEON III CN70XX/71XX low-power processor with up to four high-performance, power-optimized 64-bit processing cores, these access points will have the performance required to provide not only the 802.11ac Wave 2 multi-gigabit data rate, but also higher per-user data throughput enabled by multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) technology, while remaining in a very low-power envelope.

In addition, the advanced hardware-acceleration for security and L3-L7 processing in CN70XX/71XX enables these access points to provide a high level of intelligence at the edge of Wi-Fi networks by integrating the controller function and application-level visibility into each access point, thus eliminating a single point of failure and the potential performance bottlenecks of a centralised controller.

The rich I/O configuration on CN70XX/71XX also provides a high degree of flexibility for high-throughput 1G/2.5G/5G/10G Ethernet backhaul.

The OCTEON III CN70XX/CN71XX families of Multi-Core cnMIPS64 Processors target SMB and entry-level enterprise platforms for networking, security, storage and control plane applications. The families integrate single to quad cnMIPS64 v3 cores with virtualisation capabilities and hypervisor support.

The highly-integrated SoCs also include a rich set of I/O’s and Cavium’s advanced hardware acceleration for deep packet inspection (DPI). The CN70XX/CN71XX families deliver the most optimised solution for power, performance, and price in next-generation applications.
