Industry standard network design platform addresses the wireless industry shift to multi-technology networks enabling RF planners to design for both indoor Wi-Fi and cellular coverage in one product

iBwave adds Wi-Fi to its in-building cellular coverage design tool

iBwave, the provider of in-building software and training, has announced the release of enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities in its industry standard network design software platform. The company claims this makes it the first product to perform Wi-Fi and cellular indoor wireless designs in a single tool.

With demand for indoor wireless data quickly increasing, operators are offloading data traffic to less expensive and more flexible small cell and Wi-Fi networks, especially in crowded venues.

Given this shift toward multi-technology networks, iBwave said it has applied the thoroughness of its industry standard cellular network design software to Wi-Fi, creating a carrier grade Wi-Fi design platform. The company sees this release as a first step toward addressing the carrier-grade Wi-Fi network design market.

“iBwave is well positioned to emphasise Wi-Fi planning because of its expertise in carrier grade technologies,” said Mario Bouchard, president & CEO at iBwave. “Five years ago, Wi-Fi technology was pretty basic, but with all the new protocol releases, it is much closer to LTE today. We are used to designing for the LTE modulation scheme and the way the traffic is handled, so handling Wi-Fi the same way is easy for us.”

iBwave has developed its own Wi-Fi RF data collection tool in iBwave Mobile, the company’s mobile app for indoor wireless professionals on the go. The collection tool enables seamless integration of the collected data into iBwave Design, increasing efficiency and accuracy for optimal carrier-grade Wi-Fi designs.

iBwave Mobile now also offers the ability to create Wi-Fi and cellular designs directly from the field on a mobile device. This, paired with iBwave Design’s existing Wi-Fi design capabilities, means Wi-Fi and cellular networks for any venue can be planned and designed in a single file format.
