Virgin Media strikes new Wi-Fi partnership with The Cloud

The Cloud has announced a partnership to give Virgin Media’s mobile customers access to fast, free WiFi across more than 22,000 UK hotspots. Available to all Virgin Mobile customers, Virgin Media’s WiFi Buddy app will seamlessly connect to The Cloud’s WiFi whenever the device is in range.

Virgin Media’s WiFi Buddy app authenticates the handset via the SIM card and automatically connects to approved hotspots without the customer needing to provide their details or further information.

Annie Brooks, Director of Mobile at Virgin Media, said: “We want our customers to have the best possible data connection, wherever they are. Working with The Cloud, Virgin Mobile customers will get WiFi internet access in lots of popular retail stores, bars, hotels, stadiums and other venues across the country.

“Being able to offer such widespread data connectivity for people while they are on the go is increasingly important, as is ensuring the experience is seamless and simple to use.”

This deal is part of The Cloud’s burgeoning wholesale business which has seen it partner with the likes of MasterCard in recent months.

“This is a key strategic relationship for The Cloud,” commented Roger Matthews, commercial director, The Cloud. “We have spent the last ten years not only growing our hotspot network but also delivering a great customer experience, consistently achieving the highest customer satisfaction rating versus our competitors. We want to ensure we are a major part of the UK’s expanding mobile ecosystem and partnering with companies like Virgin Media is absolutely vital. This is an exciting time in mobile and we’re pleased to be part of it.”

Virgin Media's 'WiFi Buddy' app, which simplifies and automates its customers' Wi-Fi access, uses technology from the Devicescape Service Platform, deployed by Virgin Media earlier this year.

The Devicescape Service Platform is underpinned by the company’s Curated Virtual Network (CVN) of more than 20 million amenity Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide, each constantly monitored for quality, security and availability.
