Sigma Designs powers devolo’s Z-Wave-based home control products

Sigma Designs, the intelligent system-on-chip (SoC) solutions provider for Smart TV, Smart home and IP-based set-top-boxes, has announced that European powerline communications provider devolo AG has launched the Z-Wave technology for its entirely new devolo Home Control product line.

The devolo solution, powered by Sigma Designs' latest Z-Wave 500 series wireless communications technology, makes home automation simple with a modular system and plug-and-play components to maximise safety, security, comfort and convenience.

Available beginning in November 2014 at retail stores, this new solution enables consumers to easily install and operate their own home control systems.

The new devolo Home Control solution includes an affordable starter set with a central home unit and components that can be combined to provide smart control over all connected devices, such as appliances, thermostats and power outlets.

The system is easy to expand, and requires no complicated hardware installation or IT know-how. For installation and control, the unit can be accessed via Wi-Fi or remote Internet connection to a simple online user interface, or smartphone/tablet apps.

In addition, the system can be operated entirely offline. A high-performance transmission and receiving module in the central unit ensures optimal range for connecting devices using the Z-Wave wireless smart home standard.

The devolo brand already has a substantial retail presence based on its very successful HPAV products, the company claimed. The devolo Z-Wave Home Control product line leverages its HPAV expertise and massive retail footprint.

"The Z-Wave standard for communication in the smart home provides us with the ability to easily connect a wide spectrum of devices as part of the devolo Home Control system, using the industry-standard wireless protocols," said Heiko Harbers, CEO of devolo.

"Ease of installation, operation and expandability are key attributes across the full devolo product portfolio that brings outstanding value to consumers, and by offering this new Home Control system direct to end users via retail outlets, we are enabling them to very quickly build their own smart homes, increasing convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security."

Z-Wave wireless technology is at the heart of the smart home and The Internet of Things, providing industry-leading reliability, ease of installation and interoperability. The Z-Wave Alliance ecosystem includes more than 1,100 certified devices and 300 member companies catering to the smart home.

"The Internet of Things is growing rapidly; interoperability and ease of use are critical to provide a seamless experience for the consumer who wants to enjoy the benefits of a smart home," said Raoul Wijgergangs, vice-president home connectivity business line for Sigma Designs.

"The combination of Z-Wave technology and market reach, with the unique capabilities of the devolo home control system, offers an exciting new solution for consumers who want a home control system that is easy to manage and expand. This product line from devolo also creates a fast time to market solution for service providers who may want to offer home control services to their subscribers."

Z-Wave wireless mesh networking technology (ITU standard G.9959 with protocol stack from Sigma Designs) allows a wide array of devices in and around the home to communicate, including lighting, appliances, HVAC, and security systems.
