Thales tests 4G PMR solution in utility environment with EDF

Thales has successfully tested its NEXIUM wireless broadband 4G/LTE standard professional mobile radio solution under operational conditions with the electric utility EDF, it announced today (2 July 2014).

The applications deployed by Thales were evaluated by a whole range of EDF users, including maintenance, security, safety and site surveillance staff. The numerous operational users who took part in the field trial deployed several types of terminals including Thales’ ruggedised TeSquad 4G terminal.

The staff had a chance to experience the gains in efficiency and security offered by the solution's on-the-move multimedia capabilities. These included group calling, geolocated data collection and real-time photo and video transfer features.

EDF underlined its interest in 4G/LTE technology for its excellent radio coverage even inside industrial buildings, where propagation conditions can be particularly challenging, as well as outside the site. This solution also allows services currently provided by different radiocommunication systems to be integrated within a single infrastructure.

Thales said the success of the trials is a further endorsement of its 4G/LTE secured communications solutions and its ability to guarantee the security, availability and resilience of mission-critical applications for civilian users.
