Caribbean island’s first LTE network will be one of the fastest anywhere and will include strategically placed small cells which will also increase indoor access to 3G coverage

Alcatel-Lucent and Setar bring 4G to the Caribbean island of Aruba

Alcatel-Lucent has deployed a 4G LTE network for Setar, the leading telecommunications service provider on the Caribbean island of Aruba.

The deployment, which marks the launch of 4G services on the island, makes use of 20MHz of spectrum in the 1800MHz frequency band to deliver one of the world’s fastest 4G LTE networks, with a high quality of experience for users of smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices. Setar has also deployed small cells in strategic locations around the island to increase indoor access to Setar’s 3G (WCDMA) network.

Setar will deliver ultra-broadband mobile access to Aruba, a 33 kilometer-long island in the southern Caribbean with a population of over 100,000. As a popular tourism location Setar will deliver world-class mobile broadband access to tourists and residents alike, wherever they want it throughout the island and inside buildings.

Alcatel-Lucent’s LTE Solution deployment includes:

  • lightRadio™ LTE radio access network (RAN) operating at 1800MHz
  • Evolved Packet Core (EPC) including the P-Gateway, S-Gateway and MME
  • Subscriber data manager consolidates profile data from across the mobile network to enable the creation of personalised services.
  • lightRadio small cells adding capacity and coverage to Setar’s 3G service.

4G LTE and small cells are key elements of The Shift Plan, Alcatel-Lucent’s recovery and restructuring strategy to become a specialist vendor of IP networking and ultra-broadband access.

Roland Croes, SETAR’s managing director, said: “Setar has always been the leader in telecommunications for Aruba.  Being the first to give our subscribers access to the benefits of a 4G LTE network was the obvious next step for us and our successful delivery confirms our leadership position. Improved indoor reception through the use of small cells is one more way we are improving the quality of experience for our customers.”

Osvaldo Di Campli, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s Caribbean and Latin America region, said: “Being able to offer a full end-to-end solution for their 4G LTE network was a very important consideration for SETAR.  Including small cells in the offer made Alcatel-Lucent the clear choice to accomplish Setar’s goals of delivering faster and better quality service to their mobile customers.”
