Powerco electricity and gas network utility chooses 4RF digital radios

New Zealand utility deploys 4RF Aprisa SR point-to-multipoint radios to provide secure communications for telemetry and SCADA applications

Powerco electricity and gas network utility chooses 4RF digital radios

One of Australasia’s most innovative utilities has chosen 4RF to supply digital radios. Powerco, New Zealand's second largest electricity and gas supplier, has a strong focus on network improvements driving its reputation as a safe, reliable energy partner.

Powerco needed to replace an analogue SCADA radio system with modern digital radios to safeguard its network through a major upgrade project for their supervision control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.

When the first phase is completed 4RF will have supplied more than 170 of the new Aprisa SR family radios for the network. The system also includes 14 protected base stations configurations.

Powerco’s Aaron Gayton commented: “Powerco is working hard to be more responsive to the needs of our customers and improve network performance by getting as close to real time acquisition and control of the electricity network as possible, this assists with management of SAIDI, SAIFI, asset control and safety.

“Having previously used the Aprisa XE point-to-point radio, we were confident that 4RF was able to provide a market-leading solution. We look forward to deploying 4RF’s breakthrough Aprisa SR+ product in the coming months.”

Powerco liked the ease of use, extensive security capabilities, and the future proof features of the Aprisa SR family. A key benefit to the company was the ability to use the open SNMP management standard to monitor their SCADA radio network operation.

The Aprisa SR family shares a common software architecture with a highly effective MAC and extensive management features supported by either the standard Aprisa SR or high speed Aprisa SR+ hardware platforms supporting speeds to 120 kbit/s.

With customers in more than 130 countries, 4RF provides radio communications equipment for critical infrastructure applications in markets such as utilities, oil and gas, transport, telecommunications, public safety, military and government. Typical applications include monitoring and control, mobile radio and cellular backhaul and communication of internet, voice and data traffic.

The Aprisa SR and Aprisa SR+ point-to-multipoint radios provide secure communications for telemetry and SCADA applications. The Aprisa XE point-to-point link provides long distance, carrier-class communications.

4RF radios are ETSI certified with excellent RF performance, support for both serial and IP traffic and superior reliability and ease of use.
