Dessau Municipal Works fires up Hytera DMR system to deal with flood crisis

Dessau Municipal Works, which handles the supply of water, electricity, natural gas and heat in the Dessau region of Germany, faced a major crisis following the major flooding in June 2013.

The height of the flood waters caused a disaster situation to be declared in the city of Dessau. Dessau Municipal Works had commissioned a new DMR trunked radio system from Hytera, which was in the final stages of deployment when the flood crisis hit the city.

The final commissioning of the Hytera DMR system was speeded up to ensure secure radio communications in the region. Thanks to the immediate availability and reliability of the radio system, the crisis management group at the Dessau Municipal Works was able to maintain good communications, which helped it deal with the crisis more efficiently, while also gaining a first impression of the performance capability of the system at the same time.

Overall, 35 Hytera handheld radio devices (PD785G) went into operation with the crisis management group. The Dessau Municipal Works said they were impressed with the system’s operational capabilities.

The mobile radio system based on the open mobile radio standard DMR Tier III presents the Dessau Municipal Works with a powerful voice and data communication. The installation consists of an exchange node and two base stations.

The two radio cells cover the regions of Dessau and Dessau-Roßlau. Following the crisis operation, the site acceptance in Dessau was performed successfully, so that the mobile radio system was officially accepted by the operating company DATEL.

Dessau Municipal Works handles the supply of water, electricity, natural gas and heat in both Dessau and Dessau-Roßlau. Additional services, such as public transportation, telecommunication or airport traffic, complement the extensive service range for the citizens.

The subsidiary, Daten- und Telekommunikations-GmbH Dessau (DATEL), specialises in communication systems. As a local provider, DATEL offers its services to both the municipal works and to private customers. It also provides telephone connections, Internet access points and broadband services.
