ZTE cloud radio solution to aid high-performance LTE networks

ZTE has showcased its Cloud Radio Solution for 4G network optimisation at the Mobile Asia Expo conference in Shanghai.

Comprised of the Cloud Scheduling and Cloud Coordination modules, ZTE’s Cloud Radio Solution enables operators to build high-performance LTE networks and deliver improved user-experience to consumers, resolving key engineering challenges in 4G network deployment. China Mobile is utilising ZTE’s Cloud Radio Solution to optimise trial TD-LTE networks in Guangzhou.

As operators transition from 2G and 3G networks to LTE, they are likely to find signal interference to be a far more severe engineering challenge. Interference between closely-situated base stations is one of the key limiting factors for transmission capacity of wireless networks.

Heterogeneous networks sharing the same frequency exacerbate the signal interference issue for LTE, and the problem is further compounded by rapid subscriber growth.

ZTE’s Cloud Scheduling module utilises a central scheduler to manage network resources on a real-time basis and achieve unified network scheduling. The Cloud Coordination module enables seamless and borderless coordination for the whole network to improve user experience.

Cloud Scheduling realises coordination at the cell level from a macro perspective, while Cloud Coordination realises coordination at the user level from a micro perspective. The two-level coordination helps operators build smooth LTE networks.

In April 2013, ZTE and China Mobile conducted the Phase I Cloud Radio Solution verification in a project site in Guangzhou. When the Cloud Scheduling function was enabled, with the network at more than 70% loading, the data throughput volume for cell-edge users increased by 40%.

When the Cloud Coordination function was enabled, the throughput volume increased by between 20% and 100%, with the improvement most pronounced for cell-edge users. The test by ZTE and China Mobile was the first site-level verification of LTE-Advanced coordination technology in the global telecommunications industry.

The performance of ZTE’s Cloud Radio Solution in Phase I has prompted China Mobile to expand the scale of the test in order to collect more performance data. In June 2013, ZTE and China Mobile started the Phase II large-scale Cloud Radio verification in the Tianhe commercial area of Guangzhou, a complex wireless environment with a variety of data transmission requirements.

With the rapid development of LTE networks, the focus of operators is shifting from capacity expansion and subscriber growth to user experience. Apart from delivering improved overall LTE network performance, ZTE’s Cloud Radio Solution effectively provides an uplift of service quality to cell edge users.

With multiple-layer coordination within bases stations and network users, ZTE’s Cloud Radio Solution will help China Mobile build smooth and seamless LTE networks with the best user experience.
