Antcor announces multi-mode extension of Proteus Wi-Fi software

Antcor, an industry provider of 802.11 Wi-Fi intellectual property for the communications and connectivity chip industry, today (11.06.13) introduced the multi mode extension (MME) of its Proteus Wi-Fi software.

The company stated that Proteus is the only Wi-Fi IP available in the global market that supports up to 4x4 MIMO and speeds up to 1.7Gbps, enabling the next generation Wi-Fi access points, home gateways and small cells.

Implemented primarily in DSP (digital signal processing)-software and with minimal hardware acceleration, the Proteus offers a unique combination of performance, flexibility and scalability, Antcor said.

Traditionally Wi-Fi semiconductor solutions are implemented as hardwired and inflexible designs. This means that the ‘use cases’ and applications to be served are fixed and predefined from the early stages of the system design.

MME technology enables the dynamic software configuration of Proteus core to operate either as a single 4x4 802.11ac or as multiple simultaneous wireless access points of 3x3, 2x2 and 1x1, accelerating time to market and expanding addressable markets with a single System On Chip (SoC) design.

Lazaros Kapsias, president and CTO of Antcor, commented: ‘Until now, the programmable approach was focusing on combining different communication and connectivity standards in a single platform. With the MME technology Antcor introduces today we unfold the merits of a programmable architecture in the Wi-Fi standard alone.’

With MME technology, the different possible configurations that can be configured on the fly expand significantly the addressable market and use cases, bringing additional benefits to Proteus licensees.

Costas Meimetis, CEO of Antcor, commented: ‘The adoption of our Proteus solution is overwhelming as we are counting key-customers, just a few months after its official release earlier this year. Our licensees are coming from different market segments ranging from high-end small cell to low-power machine to machine (M2M) applications. We strongly believe that Proteus-MME technology will enable our customers to address a variety of markets with the minimum investment.’
