Paradox Engineering and Philips Lighting collaborate on smart street-lighting

Integrated solution will allow cities to remotely monitor and manage their lighting systems as part of a wider smart city infrastructure programme by leveraging the synergies between interconnected sensors and devices

Paradox Engineering and Royal Philips Electronics are collaborating to develop integrated technologies for network-connected street-lighting management solutions.

Recognizing the high value of Paradox Engineering’s PE.AMI wireless network platform, Philips Lighting is developing network-compatible lighting products to complement their existing offerings. These feature a wide range of luminaires and the state-of-the-art CityTouch Lighting Management software.

The integrated propositions will enable cities to remotely monitor and manage lighting assets as a part of their larger smart-city infrastructure. Leveraging synergies of interconnected sensors and devices, including LED luminaires for street lighting, cities will save costs and improve livability, while reducing carbon emissions.

Paradox’s PE.AMI platform

PE.AMI is the open standard multipurpose broadband/narrowband wireless sensor network platform. It features hardware (nodes and gateways), software and a web based management system for machine-to-machine (M2M), smart cities and utility applications supporting multiple services (from lighting management to advanced meter reading, waste management, parking and public transport management and many more) and full interoperability.

Philips Lighting offers a complete range of outdoor lighting products including CityTouch, the industry leading lighting management solution. Integrating their respective technologies, while sharing relevant customer and application insights, Paradox Engineering and Philips Lighting will offer state-of-the-art and future proof solutions representing the foundation for wider smart city initiatives within the broader Internet of Things.

Changing attitudes to city lighting

Budget constraints, policy frameworks and objectives of sustainability and livability are changing the way cities and governments are thinking about lighting.  Municipalities and utilities are increasingly looking for smarter solutions to effectively optimise their public lighting assets as it offers tremendous opportunities to reduce operational costs and energy consumption.

Moreover, an urban lighting infrastructure is the ideal carrier to implement city-wide networks enabling multiple wireless service delivery applications. This in turn leads to a more efficient and integrated approach to address the city’s challenges through leverage of a single, common use network platform, shared investments and consequently a much quicker return on investment.

The two companies have been working together to combine PE.AMI technology with Philips Lighting’s control components as an integral part of a luminaire system.

Ubiquitous network infrastructures

Niels Van Duinen, strategic marketing director of Philips Professional Lighting Solutions, said: ‘Smart cities will migrate to common-use wireless networks and Paradox Engineering’s PE.AMI is at the forefront of this technology. The city’s street lighting is an excellent carrier for these ubiquitous network infrastructures. Integrating LED street lighting in a way that allows interoperability and exchange of available sensor data will help to improve lighting performance and efficiency drastically.

San Francisco pilot project

Cooperation between Paradox Engineering and Philips Lighting started with the realization and implementation of a pilot project with remote management and monitoring of public services in San Francisco, USA (pictured).

Endorsed by the San Francisco Public Utility Commission, this project prepares the implementation of a secured wireless communication network for remote monitoring and control of different applications such as street lighting, electric vehicle charging stations, smart electricity meters and traffic signals.

In this pilot project, Paradox Engineering installed its multifunctional and bidirectional 6LoWPAN/IPv6 wireless full mesh narrowband / broadband communication network. Philips Lighting provided Philips Lumec RoadStar LED street lights.

After full implementation of a lighting infrastructure, the second phase of this pilot in San Francisco covers the integration of all other applications. Paradox Engineering provides the overall infrastructure design, engineering and delivery, including the technology and expertise to streamline the implementation of the PE.AMI IPv6 wireless full mesh network and all components.

Philips Lighting said it fully embraces SFPUC's objectives and their approach to build a smart and livable city, and contributes to the project with practical and conceptual support, including the supply of products for easy installation and scalability.
