Company’s UK Marine business to supply communications to drilling rig in the North Sea and to a Serco vessel used to support the UK armed forces

SELEX Elsag wins UK North Sea drilling rig and Serco contracts

The UK Marine business of SELEX Elsag, a Finmeccanica company, has won two contracts in the UK. The first contract involves supplying a comprehensive communications and safety equipment suite to a jack-up drilling rig operated in the North Sea.


The package features Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS) for both primary and secondary radio rooms. Helicopter communications, a non-directional heli-beacon, together with a fleet broadband service complete the communications package. Safety systems also include lifeboat search and rescue transponders and emergency position-indicating radio beacons.

Installation will take place during a scheduled refit in the UK and is expected to complete by the end of July 2012.

Ryan Dawe, Commercial Sales Manager, said: ‘The award of this contract further strengthens the longstanding involvement of SELEX Elsag Marine supporting North Sea operations. It demonstrates our ability to understand and fulfil the demanding requirements of the marine oil and gas industry.’

The second contract won by the UK Marine business is to supply a comprehensive communications and navigations suite to the Serco vessel, SD Northern River.

The package features a Ku-Band VSAT system (including five-year airtime package), UK MoD specified UHF communications and an underwater telephone system for communicating with submarines. The navigation element of the supply includes JRC radars and Transas ECDIS and BNWAS systems.

Installation phases are taking place via SELEX Elsag Marine’s regional offices in Falmouth and Glasgow.
