The LTE subscriber base is predicted to pass the 200 million mark by the end of 2015, according to a report by analyst firm Research and Markets.
Based on Research and Market’s forecasts, the worldwide subscriber base is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 187.7% between 2010 and 2015.
In contrast, the worldwide 3G subscriber base reached only 100 million in the first six years after its launch. The report said migration to LTE technology was not just the preserve of developed markets, as mobile network operators (MNOs) in developing markets are also looking to do the same.
The report suggested that although Wi-Max has a head start on LTE, the ease with which MNOs operating on GSM/UMTS networks can progress to LTE is expected to drive a surge in LTE network deployments.
