There are a number of significant antenna specifications that determine the selection of an appropriate antenna for a particular application. The power rating, in particular when the antenna is utilised in a multicarrier transmitter combiner application, is a critical specification that must be considered. This specification has traditionally been limited to the average continuous power that can be handled by the antenna; however, there is another power-related specification which needs to be considered in today’s high powered transmitter multicarrier combiner applications, in particular in light of the emergence of today’s new digital modulation technologies. This is the Peak Instantaneous Power (PIP) rating, and this paper will explain the significance of this specification and how it is derived.
